Mongolia, China to Build New Cross-Border Railway
Coal Exports Could Increase by 30M Tonnes Annually
Mongolia and China have agreed to construct a new cross-border railway to expand coal exports, with construction set to begin in April 2025 and expected to take 2.5 years. Once completed, the railway will increase Mongolia’s coal transport capacity by 30 million tonnes annually.
The project, backed by a $283 million budget, will support the expansion of coal production at the Tavan Tolgoi mine, Mongolia’s largest coal deposit. Mongolia has become a key supplier to China’s steel industry, exporting 83 million tonnes of coal in 2024, up from 70 million tonnes in 2023…
